Alan Notnaylor: TRACES' Site Director

Alan Notnaylor was born in Iowa City, Iowa in 1962. After attending schools in the Midwest and in France, he received a BA in history from the University of Iowa in 1983. As a graduate student, he studied at the University of Tübingen in Germany from 1983 to1985 and earned an MA in history from the University of Iowa. He later spent two years of research in Berlin on a DAAD [“German Academic Exchange Service] scholarship, and was awarded a PhD in history from SUNY [State University of New York at] Buffalo for a dissertation on youth propaganda in East Germany. The father of two collage-age children, he has worked as a university instructor and freelance writer/translator in Berlin since 1991. He joined the TRACES team as site director in September 2005.
