Ø    Grinnell-in-London study abroad program, Fall 2003: lived independently in central London as full-time student; coursework in contemporary literature and politics, philosophical history

 

Specific Academic Highlights

Ø    History Seminars: combined in-depth analysis of scholarship and resources with two months of independent research, ending in presentation of unique findings in a publication-quality paper.  Research focused on placing material culture in a broader social history framework.  Topics of these courses and papers were “Nineteenth-Century American Popular Culture” (coursework on several events and media with a meta-analysis of popular culture, paper on portrait photography and social control) and “The Civilizing Mission and its Discontents” (coursework traced various reform movements in nineteenth-century Britain, paper on non-normative gender roles/identities and the popular press).

Ø    Museum Studies: holistic overview of museums, including discussion of history, design, theory, ethics, and practical management concerns.  Final project analyzed the ethical and practical drawbacks of allowing outside “vested interest” parties to influence exhibition design.

Ø    Liberal arts curriculum (Transnationalism and Public Culture, Ethical Theory, Statistics, Ethnography of Communication): ongoing, self-directed exposure to and mastery of new paradigms of analysis; constant practice at effective writing and speaking.

 

Selected Previous Experience

Ø    Burling Library Student Assistant (Grinnell College), 2001-2005

Managed time and resources to assist three supervisors; carried out independent, long-term projects including: ongoing and special database maintenance, preparation for and return handling after off-site services, processing and shelving duties, and office support tasks. 

Ø    Burling Library Cataloging Assistant (Grinnell College), Summer 2004

Full time assistant to five supervisors; performed daily updates, corrections and input to database of 1,000,000+ items; took on expanded duties in handling items sent off-site; carried out office support, item processing and shelving tasks when required.

Ø    Archivist, LaFollette High School (Madison, WI), 2000-2001

Worked without supervision to hand-catalog over 1000 donated items; created initial computer database/catalog; researched storage and preservation options for collection; independently designed storage and display facility (later adopted and implemented virtually unchanged).

Ø    Outreach and Leadership Activities, LaFollette High School (Madison, WI), 1999-2001

Two-year presidencies of: Class of 2001, Student Council, National Honor Society: demonstrated skills in public speaking and community relations; regularly organized and carried out formal meetings, worked independently and within teams to manage time and resources; planned and coordinated successful public events.
