publication-quality paper. Research
focused on placing material culture in a broader social history framework.
Topics of these courses and papers were “Nineteenth-Century
American Popular Culture” (coursework on several events and media with a
meta-analysis of popular culture, paper on portrait photography and social
control) and “The Civilizing Mission and its Discontents” (coursework
traced various reform movements in nineteenth-century Britain, paper on
non-normative gender roles/identities and the popular press). Ø
Museum Studies: holistic
overview of museums, including discussion of history, design, theory,
ethics, and practical management concerns.
Final project analyzed the ethical and practical drawbacks of
allowing outside “vested interest” parties to influence exhibition
design. Ø
Liberal arts curriculum (Transnationalism
and Public Culture, Ethical Theory, Statistics, Ethnography of
Communication): ongoing, self-directed exposure to and mastery of new

Assistant (Grinnell College), Summer 2004 Full time assistant to
five supervisors; performed daily updates, corrections and input to database
of 1,000,000+ items; took on expanded duties in handling items sent
off-site; carried out office support, item processing and shelving tasks
when required. Ø
Archivist, LaFollette High
School (Madison, WI), 2000-2001 Worked without
supervision to hand-catalog over 1000 donated items; created initial
computer database/catalog; researched storage and preservation options for
collection; independently designed storage and display facility (later
adopted and implemented virtually unchanged). Ø
