This article appeared in the Mason City Globe Gazette on March 17, 2007 MASON CITY — A project focusing on the internment of 15,000 German-American civilians, including some Iowans, from 1941 to 1948 will travel to Mason City and Clear Lake on Thursday, April 5. Humanities Iowa, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, has awarded $1,000 to TRACES Center for History and Culture in St. Paul for its project “Vanished: German-American Civilian Internment 1941-48.” The TRACES BUS-eum will stop from 9 a.m. to noon at North Iowa Area Community College, followed by a 3 to 7 p.m. stay at Clear Lake Public Library. Using 10 narrative panels, an NBC “Dateline” documentary and a 1945 U.S. Government color film, the exhibit will tell the stories of those who were imprisoned. Special guest speakers and related programs will also be held. Humanities Iowa is a private, non-profit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, whose mission is to enhance the civic life, culture, and identity of Iowans. | Home | |
