From April 1939 to March 1943 about 185 refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe found an unexpected safe haven at Scattergood, a temporary hostel in what had been a Quaker boarding school near West Branch, Iowa. Among them were a large percentage of Jews, as well as political opponents of Hitler’s regime, Christian religious leaders, artists and others endangered in the “New Germany”.

The Iowa Jewish Historical Society and TRACES will bring this story to life through artifacts and audio-visual materials. Never before has an exhibit made this little-known story accessible to the public. Former Scattergood staff and their “guests” will attend the opening.

Sponsored by the Iowa Jewish Historical Society and TRACES

and supported by a major grant from Humanities Iowa and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
